Its amazing to see that some of the brightest minds, like Elon Musk, in our world believe that our life is some sort of simulation like VR. That every breath we take is all part of some advanced computer code written to stimulate a boring life in the “Real” world.

“If you assume any rate of improvement at all, then games will be indistinguishable from reality, or civilization will end. One of those two things will occur,” Musk said. “Therefore, we are most likely in a simulation, because we exist.”

Now lets take a step back and analyze this for a moment. I do not claim to be a fancy scholar in any sense of the word, so for those like myself that need this sophistocated idea dumbed down a bit to ingest, this is what I believe he is trying to imply.

First, we must assume the math on our estimation of the real age of the universe is true which we assume to be 13.8 billion years old. If thats the case then life in other parts of the galaxy would have ample time to have learned to invent a type of technology that is far superior than what we can comprehend.

Second, we must put things in perspective. In a span of 100 years we went from the primary mode of transportation being a horse and buggy, to self driving cars that act as a portable apartment. That is an unimaginable feat that our realtives in the past woudn’t have believed to be a possibility. Thus, with 13.8 billion years of life constantly evolving it is entirely possible that some version of ourselves created something that simulates life to the point where we cannot distinguish between realities. If we really look at our ever-growing tech we already have the basis of a simulation in production today in the form of VR.

Third, Elon musk adds “civilzation will end” as the other outcome of humanity. I can only assume he means that due to the nature of life and our ever growing needs, eventually as we expand accross the universe in search of survival we will come to a point where we have exhausted all options which causes our inevitable demise. Could it be that in order for our species to continue to exist we need to limit ourselves in the “Real World”? Its entirely possible. Maybe long ago in a galaxy far away we came to the decision to sacrifice our physical being for a virtual one. Similar to the episode of black mirror, we just upload our conciousness to the cloud. Hmm?
